Flesh and Stone

The Touch 1

The discipline needed to succeed in architecture has gone from scholarly to business. This has resulted in a crushing divide between the academic world and the so called 'practitioners'. The publications which once stood as a bridge between theory and practice have also gone over to the side of business. They say that we get very watery eyed with nostalgia about a past we will never know. What transpired once in the maze of streets that is a city like Rome, we can only romanticise but what is apparent is also what was and the material was prevalently natural, sands, limes, baked clay and stone. In streets full of bodies whether be they the flesh of people or the muscle of horses, the artifice of today with all our dangerous metallic objects would be unthinkable, yet, this is our reality, our duality, to place too many of these flesh piercing objects in the frontline of our collective conscience.

A slab of stone is placed on a pedestal here celebrating a symbiosis between the cellular body and the material with which that body builds the floor, the wall, the roof overhead, with such affinity.
